EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant print depicts the Polish Airborne Units Memorial located in the Polish Cemetery of Lommel, Belgium. The memorial stands as a tribute to the brave Polish soldiers who served in the Polish Independent Parachute Brigade Group during Operation Market Garden in 1944. Operation Market Garden was a major military campaign during World War II, consisting of two distinct parts - airborne forces and land forces. The airborne forces, referred to as "Market," involved the American 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions and the British 1st Airborne Division. The Polish 1st Independent Parachute Brigade Group, commanded by General Stanislaw Sosabowski, was part of the British 1st Airborne Division. They were planned to drop on the second day and reinforce the action at the Arnhem road bridge. However, the operation did not go as planned, and the Polish soldiers faced numerous challenges and hardships. The memorial lists the 302nd, 308th, and 317th Polish Airborne units and their battle honors from both World Wars, including the Liberation of Ypres in World War II. The cemetery contains 256 white crosses and two Stars of David, representing the Jewish soldiers who lost their lives in the conflict. The Polish Consulate in Brussels maintains the cemetery as a reminder of the sacrifices made by these brave Polish soldiers. This print captures the solemn atmosphere of the memorial, with the sun casting long shadows over the white crosses and the Polish flag flying proudly in the wind. The memorial serves as a reminder of the bravery and resilience of the Polish soldiers who fought in Operation Market Garden and the importance of remembering their sacrifices.
