EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "A Comparison of Ancient Wonders: Pompey's Pillar and the Obelisk of Cleopatra" This image, created by Ali Bey el Abbassi during his travels in the late 18th century, showcases two iconic ancient structures: Pompey's Pillar in Egypt and the Obelisk of Cleopatra in present-day Istanbul, Turkey. The illustration is based on a copperplate engraving by Dell Acqua, hand-colored by Lazaretti, and is part of Giovanni Battista Sonzogno's Collection of the Most Interesting Voyages (Raccolta de Viaggi Piu Interessanti), published in Milan between 1815 and 1817. Pompey's Pillar, located in Old Cairo, Egypt, is a 28-meter (92-foot) red granite column, erected in AD 293 to commemorate Emperor Diocletian's victory over the Blemmyes and Nobades. The column is adorned with intricate carvings of various gods and mythological creatures. The Obelisk of Cleopatra, formerly known as the Thermeion Obelisk, is a 10.5-meter (34.4-foot) ancient Egyptian obelisk, now located in Istanbul's Hippodrome Square. Originally, it was erected in the Egyptian city of Heliopolis around 1500 BC, during the reign of Pharaoh Thutmose III. The obelisk was later transported to Constantinople by Emperor Constantine the Great in AD 328 and was moved to its current location in the 16th century. Ali Bey el Abbassi's illustration offers a unique perspective on these two ancient wonders, allowing viewers to appreciate their grandeur and historical significance side by side. The detailed depiction of the structures, as well as their surrounding landscapes, provides a glimpse into the rich history and culture of the ancient world.
