EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Roman Emperor Augustus, the first emperor of the Roman Empire, as represented in Abraham Bogaerts' "De Roomsche Monarchy" published in Utrecht in 1697. Born as Gaius Octavius Thurinus in 63 BC, Augustus rose to power through military prowess and political acumen, earning the title of Imperator Caesar Divi filius Augustus, or "Imperator Caesar, son of the Divine Julius." Augustus' reign, which lasted from 27 BC to AD 14, is considered the classical period of Roman history. He is renowned for his extensive reforms that transformed the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire, establishing the Pax Romana, or Roman Peace, which brought relative stability and prosperity to the empire for over two centuries. This copperplate engraving, produced during the 17th century, offers a striking rendition of Augustus' likeness. He is shown wearing a laurel wreath on his head, symbolizing his military triumphs, and a toga, the traditional Roman garment. The portrait also features the inscription "Glycerius Flavius," likely the name of the engraver or publisher. The image of Augustus serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of Roman history and the artistic prowess of the 17th century. The intricate details of the engraving, from the folds of Augustus' toga to the delicate lines of his facial features, evoke the grandeur and sophistication of the Roman Empire. This portrait remains an essential piece in the study of ancient history and the history of art.
