EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Roman Emperor Carinus, also known as Marcus Aurelius Carinus Augustus, who ruled the western Roman Empire from 283 to 285 AD. Carinus was the son of Emperor Carus and his concubine Julia Domna, making him a half-brother to Emperor Numerian, who ruled the eastern Roman Empire at the same time. The portrait, created as a copperplate engraving, is taken from the 17th-century publication "De Roomsche Monarchy" by Francois Salma, published in Utrecht. Abraham Bogaerts, a renowned engraver, was likely responsible for the creation of this image. Carinus' regal attire and serious expression convey the power and authority of the Roman Caesar. He is depicted wearing a toga, the traditional Roman garment, adorned with a broad purple stripe, symbolizing his imperial status. The imperial diadem, a crown worn by Roman emperors, sits atop his head, further emphasizing his royal position. Carinus' reign was marked by political instability and military conflict. He was eventually assassinated in 285 AD, and his successor, Diocletian, marked the beginning of a new era in Roman history. This portrait provides a fascinating glimpse into the visual representation of Roman power during the late third century AD. It serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Roman Empire and the iconic status of its emperors.
