EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Roman Emperor Florianus, also known as Marcus Annius Florianus Augustus, who ruled the Roman Empire from 276 AD until his untimely death later that same year. Florianus was a scion of the noble Annius family, which boasted a long lineage of illustrious Romans, including the famous philosopher-emperor Marcus Aurelius. The portrait, created as a copperplate engraving in the late 17th century by Abraham Bogaerts for the publication "De Roomsche Monarchy" (The Roman Monarchy) by Francois Salma, offers a striking representation of Florianus in the regal attire of a Roman emperor. Florianus is shown wearing a traditional Roman imperial crown adorned with laurel leaves, symbolizing his military triumphs and his connection to the god Apollo, the patron of Rome. He wears a toga, the traditional Roman garment, draped elegantly over his shoulder. In his right hand, Florianus holds a helmet, a symbol of his military prowess and his readiness to defend the empire. In his left hand, he holds a shield, emblazoned with the image of a bull, which was a common symbol of strength and power in Roman iconography. Florianus' stoic expression and steady gaze convey his determination and unwavering commitment to the welfare of the Roman people. Despite his brief reign, Florianus is remembered as a just and virtuous ruler, known as "Florian the Good" or "Florian the Probus" in later historical accounts. His legacy as a capable military commander and a devoted leader is commemorated in this elegant and evocative portrait, which captures the essence of Roman imperial grandeur and the enduring allure of the Caesars and Kaisers of ancient Rome.
