EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking 17th-century copperplate engraving from Abraham Bogaerts' "De Roomsche Monarchy" (The Roman Monarchy), we find the portrait of Roman Emperor Hostilian. Born as Gaius Valens Hostilianus Messius Quintus Augustus, Hostilian was the son of the Roman Emperor Trebonianus Gallus and Annia Faustina. His brief reign began in 251 AD, following the assassination of his father, and ended tragically with his own death later that same year. Hostilian's portrait showcases the classical Roman style, with a serious expression and an intricately detailed toga adorned with the imperial purple. The emperor's hair is styled in the traditional Roman quiff, and he wears the diadem, the imperial crown, upon his head. In his right hand, he holds a scepter, a symbol of his power and authority. The background of the engraving features an elaborate architectural setting, reminiscent of ancient Roman structures. The detail and precision of the engraving are evident in the intricate folds of Hostilian's toga, the ornate decorations on the columns, and the delicate lines of his facial features. Hostilian's reign was marked by political instability and military conflict, with the Sassanid Empire threatening the Roman borders. Despite his young age, Hostilian attempted to assert his authority and defend Rome against the invading forces. However, his reign was cut short when he succumbed to illness, leaving the empire in the hands of his uncle, Vibius Afinius Gallus, who ruled as Emperor Gallus. This portrait of Roman Emperor Hostilian is a testament to the artistic skill of the 17th-century engraver Abraham Bogaerts and the enduring fascination with the history and culture of ancient Rome. It serves as a reminder of the complex political landscape of the Roman Empire and the brief, yet significant, reign of this young emperor.
