EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Lucius Verus, Roman Emperor from 130 to 169 AD. Born as Lucius Aurelius Verus, he was the co-ruler with his cousin and adoptive brother, Marcus Aurelius, during the latter part of his reign. Lucius Verus was the son of Marcus Aurelius Fulvus Boiorix and Marcus Aurelius Fulvia Pia, both of noble Roman families. The portrait, created as a copperplate engraving in the late 17th century by Abraham Bogaerts for the publication "De Roomsche Monarchy" (The Roman Monarchy) by Francois Salma, offers a striking representation of Lucius Verus' regal presence. He is shown wearing the imperial diadem and a toga, symbolizing his high rank and Roman citizenship. The intricate details of the engraving, such as the textured fabric of the toga and the defined features of his face, bring the portrait to life. Lucius Verus is known for his patronage of the arts, military campaigns, and his joint rule with Marcus Aurelius, which was marked by a period of relative peace and prosperity in the Roman Empire. After Marcus Aurelius' death, Lucius Verus continued to rule alone until his death in 169 AD. This portrait serves as a testament to the artistic skill of the 17th century and offers a glimpse into the appearance and regal bearing of a Roman Emperor. The intricacies of the copperplate engraving technique, as demonstrated in this portrait, further emphasize the importance of visual representation in recording history and preserving the legacy of the ancient world.
