EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Roman Emperor Tiberius (42 BC-37 AD), also known as Tiberius Caesar Augustus, the second Roman Emperor after Augustus. Tiberius, born as Tiberius Claudius Nero, ruled the Roman Empire from 14 AD until his death in 37 AD. This portrait is a copperplate engraving taken from Abraham Bogaerts' "De Roomsche Monarchy," published in Utrecht in 1697 by Francois Salm. Tiberius is shown wearing the laurel wreath and holding an orb surmounted by a cross, symbolizing his imperial power and authority. The orb is also a common attribute of Byzantine emperors, reflecting the influence of the Eastern Roman Empire on Tiberius' representation. The inscription at the bottom of the print reads "Tiberius Caesar Divi Augusti filius Augustus," meaning "Tiberius Caesar, son of the divine Augustus." The portrait is a testament to the enduring legacy of the Roman Empire and its emperors. Tiberius, who was known for his authoritarian rule and paranoia, is often portrayed negatively in historical accounts. However, this image presents him as a regal and powerful ruler, fitting for a man who held the title of "Caesar" and "Augustus." The copperplate engraving technique used in this print allowed for high-quality, detailed reproductions of images, making it an essential tool for the dissemination of knowledge and art during the 17th century. This portrait of Tiberius is a valuable historical artifact that provides insight into the visual culture and political climate of the Roman Empire during its later years.
