EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Roman Emperor Gaius Vibius Volusianus Augustus, also known as Volusian, who ruled the Roman Empire from 251 to 253 AD. Volusian was born into the noble Aemilianus family and was the son of Marcus Aemilius Papinianus, a renowned jurist and consul. His reign was marked by military campaigns against the Sassanid Empire and internal power struggles. Volusian's portrait showcases the classical Roman style, with his regal attire and serious expression. The copperplate engraving, created by Abraham Bogaerts for the publication "De Roomsche Monarchy" by Francois Salma in Utrecht, Netherlands, in 1697, captures the intricate details of Volusian's facial features, clothing, and imperial insignia. The artist's skillful use of shading and contrast highlights the texture of the emperor's toga and the intricacy of his diadem. Volusian's reign was short-lived, as he was assassinated in 253 AD during a military campaign against the Sassanid Empire. Despite his early demise, his portrait remains an important historical artifact, providing a glimpse into the appearance and regal bearing of a Roman emperor during the late antique period. The portrait also serves as a reminder of the enduring influence of Roman culture and the classical tradition in European art.
