Red-Handed Tamarin, Saguinus midas: A Striking Portrayal from the Past This hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases the Red-Handed Tamarin, scientifically known as Saguinus midas. The image, created by J. Pass after an illustration by George Edwards, was published in Ebenezer Sibly's Universal System of Natural History in London in 1796. The Red-Handed Tamarin, also referred to as the Red-Handed Howler Monkey or the Great-Eared Tamarin, is a New World monkey native to South America. They are named for the distinctive red fur on their hands and faces, which contrasts starkly with their brown or grayish bodies. Their large, prominent ears are another distinctive feature, which can help them to regulate their body temperature and communicate with other members of their troop. This engraving provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of the Red-Handed Tamarin, which was a subject of great interest to naturalists and collectors during the 18th and 19th centuries. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of the engraving serve to highlight the unique features of this intriguing primate, which continues to captivate researchers and conservationists today. The Red-Handed Tamarin is currently listed as a Least Concern species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), but they face threats from habitat loss and fragmentation, as well as hunting for the pet trade. Efforts are ongoing to protect their habitats and promote sustainable conservation practices to ensure the long-term survival of this remarkable primate.
