EDITORS COMMENTS
In this delightful handcoloured copperplate engraving by Thomas Rowlandson, after an illustration by Henry Bunbury, we find ourselves transported back to the Regency era, where a dapper gentleman rides alongside his beautiful belle, their faces flushed with the exhilaration of the ride. However, the gentleman's expression is tinged with embarrassment, as his horse, with an exaggeratedly large rear end, lets out yet another round of flatulence. The lady, despite the awkward situation, maintains her composure, her demure smile never wavering. She sits side-saddle on a pannier seat, her elegant petticoats billowing in the wind. The gentleman, on the other hand, clutches the reins tightly, trying to hide his mortification. In the background, a parson rides a bony nag, his stern expression in stark contrast to the lighthearted scene before him. He carries a basket on the saddle, perhaps on his way to perform a religious ceremony. The contrast between the elegant couple and the stern parson adds a touch of humour to the scene. The gentleman's mount wears a saddle with a high cantle and a long, curved flap, designed to accommodate the lady's seat. The horse is adorned with a bridle, bit, and whip, all essential equipment for a Regency gentleman's mount. This charming engraving, titled "An Academy for Grown Horsemen and Annals of Horsemanship," is a testament to the grace and humour of the Regency era. It captures the essence of a romantic ride, complete with the occasional embarrassment that comes with sharing such an experience with a beloved horse.
