EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts the Richardsons Ground Squirrel, Urocitellus richardsonii, also known as the Richardsons Spermophile or the Richardsons Pocket Gopher. The image was created by the skilled hands of Trautmann, Bailey and Blampey, based on an original illustration by Ernest E. Thompson for the "Report of the Ornithologist" published by the US Department of Agriculture in 1892. The Richardsons Ground Squirrel is a native of North America, specifically found in the western United States and parts of western Canada. They are named after the American naturalist and explorer, John Richardson, who first described the species in 1828. These small rodents are characterized by their short, bushy tails, round bodies, and powerful hind legs, which enable them to dig complex burrow systems. Their diet consists mainly of seeds, nuts, and plant material, but they are also known to eat insects and other small invertebrates. Richardsons Ground Squirrels are an important part of the ecosystem, as they help to disperse plant seeds and control insect populations. This beautiful chromolithograph not only showcases the intricate details of the Richardsons Ground Squirrel's physical features but also highlights the impressive artistry of the time. The vibrant colors and precise lines capture the essence of this fascinating creature, making it a valuable addition to any collection of natural history prints.
