EDITORS COMMENTS
In this hand-colored lithograph, we find Roger de Saint-Lari, Duc de Bellegarde (1545-1611), a renowned figure of the French Renaissance. Known for his exceptional skills as the royal master of horses to both Henry IV and Louis XIII, de Saint-Lari's life was not without its share of intrigue and passion. The portrait, created by Breton after an original in Roger de Gaignières' "Portfolios from Le Bibliophile Jacob," or Paul Lacroix's "Historical Costumes of France," showcases de Saint-Lari in his regal attire, complete with a fur-trimmed robe and a plumed hat. His piercing gaze and confident posture exude an air of power and sophistication. However, the true allure of this figure lies not only in his professional accomplishments but also in his personal life. De Saint-Lari was famously involved in an affair with Gabrielle d'Estrées (1571-1607), one of Henry IV's most prominent mistresses. Their relationship was a significant one, as Gabrielle bore Henry four children, including future King Henry IV's heir, Henri, duc de Verneuil. The passionate affair between de Saint-Lari and Gabrielle d'Estrées was a topic of fascination during the time and continues to intrigue historians and scholars today. This lithograph serves as a visual reminder of a bygone era, where power, passion, and intrigue intertwined in the lives of the French aristocracy.
