EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving depicts a religious procession taking place within the ruins of the Church at Jumieges Abbey in Normandy, France, during the 1800s. The Benedictine monastery, founded in the 7th century, has been reduced to ruins, yet the sacred event continues uninterrupted. Knights from the Spanish Order of Alcantara and the Portuguese Military Order of Christ, both established during the Crusades, participate in the procession. The knights, dressed in their distinctive robes and insignia, add an air of chivalry and grandeur to the scene. The Order of Alcantara, founded in 1156, was dedicated to the care of the sick and poor, while the Order of Christ, established in 1198, was originally the Order of the Temple, a military order dedicated to protecting pilgrims to the Holy Land. The intricate details of the engraving, taken from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1829, provide a fascinating glimpse into the historical fashion and the rich cultural heritage of the time. With its blend of religious devotion, military tradition, and elegant attire, this image is a testament to the enduring spirit of the past.
