EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Sacre Coeur Orphanage and St. Joseph Juniorate, two prominent institutions in St. Helier, Jersey, during the early 1910s. Located on the left side of the image, the Sacre Coeur Orphanage provided a home and care for children who had been abandoned, orphaned, or otherwise in need. The orphanage, run by the Sisters of the Sacred Heart, was known for its commitment to the welfare and education of its young residents. Adjacent to the orphanage, on the right side of the image, stands the St. Joseph Juniorate and Seminary. This institution, also under the care of the Sisters of the Sacred Heart, served as a school and seminary for boys. Here, young students received a rigorous education, preparing them for a future in the priesthood or the religious life. The image, taken circa 1912, offers a glimpse into the past of these two important institutions. The children, dressed in their uniforms, play and laugh in the courtyard of the orphanage, while the students of St. Joseph Juniorate can be seen engaged in their studies. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the essential role that orphanages and educational institutions played in providing care, support, and opportunities for children during this time period. The Sacre Coeur Orphanage and St. Joseph Juniorate continue to hold a special place in the history of St. Helier and Jersey, representing the compassion and dedication of those who worked tirelessly to improve the lives of children in need.
