EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures members of the 1st Battalion Monmouthshire Regiment paying their respects at the St. George's Memorial Church in Ieper (Ypres), Belgium, during their commemoration of the centenary of the Battle of Passchendaele in 2017. The Battle of Passchendaele, also known as the Third Battle of Ypres, took place between July and November 1917, during World War I. It was one of the costliest battles for the British and Canadian forces, resulting in over 275,000 casualties. The Monmouthshire Regiment, part of the South Wales Borderers, played a significant role in the Battle of Passchendaele. They were involved in the initial attack on the Menin Road on July 31, 1917, and continued to fight in various engagements throughout the campaign. The regiment suffered heavy losses, with over 1,000 men killed, wounded, or missing in action. St. George's Memorial Church, located in the heart of Ieper, has been a place of pilgrimage for soldiers and their families since World War I. The church was built to commemorate the British soldiers who died in the Ypres Salient during the war. The annual Last Post Ceremony, held at the Menin Gate Memorial every evening since 1928, pays tribute to the fallen soldiers. In this photograph, we see the soldiers standing solemnly in front of the church, some with their heads bowed, others looking up at the memorial plaques inside the church. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the soldiers of the Monmouthshire Regiment and other British units during the Battle of Passchendaele and the larger conflict of World War I.
