Sherman tank Memorial, Leopoldsburg Railway Station
Leopoldsburg is in Belgium and it was directly behind the start line of Operation Market Garden. Here was a huge engineer dump built up to support the XXX Corps ground forces whose job it was to cross over the bridges captured by the airborne forces. Belgian accounts say that Leopoldsburg was liberated by the Belgian Piron Brigade on 12 Septembe 1944 (British accounts say that the Belgians assisted the 8th Armoured Brigade to liberate the town on 11 September). On 16 September General Horrocks, the Corps Commander, gave his famous briefing to officers of XXX Corps (he described the assembly as a motley audience ) in the Cinema Splendide. The scene is wonderfully portrayed in the film, A Bridge Too Far. The Sherman is (left) E4151 B1782 40 (G)s (right) E1231 B1636 LO (G) 2. The barrel of the main gun points to where the Splendide used to be (now an apartment block). On the turret is a Browning machine gun and on the side of the tank is the Guards, All Seeing Eye. Date: 2006

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the enduring presence of history at Leopoldsburg Railway Station in Belgium. The image showcases two Sherman tanks, E4151 B1782 40 (G)s and E1231 B1636 LO (G) 2, parked near the station, which served as a crucial support base for the XXX Corps ground forces during the pivotal Operation Market Garden campaign in September 1944. Leopoldsburg, located directly behind the start line of this historic battle, was the site of a massive engineer dump, built up to sustain the ground forces as they crossed over the bridges seized by the airborne forces. Belgian accounts recall that the town was liberated on September 12, 1944, by the Belgian Piron Brigade, although British records suggest that the Belgians collaborated with the 8th Armoured Brigade to free the town on September 11. On September 16, 1944, General Horrocks, the Corps Commander, addressed officers of the XXX Corps in the Cinema Splendide, now an apartment block, as depicted in the film "A Bridge Too Far." The main gun of the Sherman tank on the left in the photograph points towards the location where the Cinema Splendide once stood. The turret of the tank on the right bears a Browning machine gun, while the side of the tank on the left displays the emblem of the Guards, the All-Seeing Eye. This powerful image serves as a poignant reminder of the significant role played by the Allied forces in the liberation of Leopoldsburg and the broader context of the Operation Market Garden campaign during World War II. The photograph was taken in 2006 and is protected by rights managed licensing through Mary Evans Prints Online.
