EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1795, showcases an enchanting collection of skates and rays. The illustration features a total of eight different species, each meticulously rendered with intricate detail and vibrant colors. In the foreground, we find two varieties of skates: the common skate, Dipturus batis, and the long-nosed skate, Dipturus oxyrinchus. Both skates are characterized by their flat, disc-shaped bodies and wing-like pectoral fins, which they use to glide along the seafloor. The common skate is depicted with its distinctive white spots, while the long-nosed skate boasts a more uniform coloration. Moving on, we encounter three species of rays: the eagle ray, Myliobatis aquila, the stingray, Dasyatis pastinaca, and the thornback ray, Raja clavata. The eagle ray, with its large, wing-like pectoral fins and long, whip-like tail, is a graceful and powerful swimmer. The stingray, known for its venomous barb, is shown with its distinctive, broad pectoral fins and long, whip-like tail. The thornback ray, with its distinctive rhomboid shape and spiny dorsal fins, is a common sight in European waters. This beautiful and educational illustration not only showcases the diverse and fascinating world of skates and rays but also serves as a testament to the artistry and craftsmanship of the past. It is a reminder of the rich natural history knowledge that was passed down through generations, inspiring curiosity and wonder in children and adults alike.
