EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing hand-colored lithograph, taken from Carl Hoffmann's renowned "Book of the World" published in Stuttgart in 1849, showcases a captivating assembly of arachnids and insects in their natural habitat. At the center, the Garden Spider, Araneus diadematus, weaves its intricate web between two branches, with the male (M) and female (F) of this species displayed in their distinctive appearances. Nearby, a Spanish Fly, Lytta vesicatoria, lies in wait, its vibrant red coloration a stark contrast to the muted tones of the garden. Three varieties of blister beetles, Cantharis livida (Ruficeps), Lytta gigas, and Lydus trimaculatus, are depicted, their elongated forms and distinctive markings adding to the image's allure. Among them, the giant blister beetle, Lytta gigas, stands out with its impressive size. The seven-spot Ladybird, Coccinella septempunctata, is also present, along with other ladybird varieties, including Coccinella ocellata and Coccinella dispar. These small, colorful beetles are important predators in many gardens, helping to control pest populations. The intricate details of this lithograph not only showcase the beauty and diversity of these creatures but also provide a glimpse into the natural history of the late 1800s. The delicate hand-coloring adds depth and richness to the image, making it a true work of art.
