EDITORS COMMENTS
St. Dunstan's Church, Fleet Street: A Vibrant Scene of Urban Life in Early 19th Century London This woodcut engraving, titled 'St. Dunstan's Church, Postman, Letter Carrier and Knife-Grinder,' offers a glimpse into the bustling urban life of London during the early 19th century. The scene unfolds at St. Dunstan-in-the-West Church in Fleet Street, where various tradespeople and city dwellers go about their daily routines. At the heart of the image, the clock atop St. Dunstan's Church tower strikes the hour, as a Postman (No. 42) and a Letter Carrier from a law office (No. 43) eagerly await the arrival of the mail. The Postman, with a stack of letters and packages, is poised to deliver the day's mail to the expectant Letter Carrier. Meanwhile, a maid (No. 45) brings a pair of scissors to the Knife-Grinder (No. 45) to sharpen. The Knife-Grinder, seated on his chair mender, offers a pie to a News Boy (not depicted) and a Flying Pieman (not shown) passing by. The scene is further enriched by the presence of a Waterman (not shown) and his boat, moored under Blackfriars Bridge, and the Thames River flowing in the background. The architect, Robert Mylne, designed the bridge, which can be seen in the distance, adorned with an Obelisk. This intricately detailed woodcut engraving, created by Isaac Taylor, is an exquisite representation of the diverse and dynamic urban life in London during the Romantic era. It is an essential educational resource for students of history, geography, and the social fabric of early 19th century England. This image is part of the extensive collection of City Scenes, or a Peep into London, published by Harvey and Darton in 1828. The English sisters Ann and Jane Taylor, renowned Romantic poets and writers of children's books, authored this series.
