EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate engraving is taken from the encyclopedic work "Fish" by the Bavarian clergyman and naturalist, Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm, published in Augsburg in 1804. The engraving showcases two fascinating marine creatures: a starfish (Stromateus paurus) and a swordfish (Xiphias gladius). The starfish, depicted on the left, is identified as S. paurus, a species of starfish commonly found in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Starfish, also known as sea stars, are characterized by their distinctive radial symmetry and the ability to move across the ocean floor using their tube feet. They feed primarily on mussels, oysters, and other bivalves, using their powerful arms to pry open their shells and extract the meat within. On the right, the swordfish (X. gladius) is depicted in all its majesty. This large, powerful fish is identified by its distinctive elongated bill, which it uses to stun its prey before swallowing it whole. Swordfish are found in all temperate and tropical oceans and are known for their incredible speed and agility, making them formidable predators in the marine environment. Wilhelm's meticulous attention to detail is evident in this beautiful engraving, which captures the intricate patterns and textures of both the starfish and the swordfish. As one of the most prominent naturalists of his time, Wilhelm's work was instrumental in advancing the field of ichthyology and our understanding of the natural world. This stunning print is a testament to his dedication and passion for the study of marine creatures.
