EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1877, captures the Loudoun Castle (spelled Louden Castle in the image), a tea ship from Hankow, China, as it commences the unloading process at the bustling docks of Hankow. The ship, having sailed across the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean, carried an impressive cargo of 40,000 packages of tea. As the ship's cargo holds were opened, a hundred packages were carefully selected for breaking bulk. Two packages from each break were taken out for sampling purposes. The samples were then handed to the brokers' clerks, who were eagerly waiting on board the ship. These clerks were responsible for transporting the samples to the city warehouses of the merchants for further examination and evaluation. The scene on the dock is a hive of activity, with Chinese sailors working diligently to unload the vessel. The brokers' clerks, dressed in formal attire, can be seen on board the ship, ensuring the samples are handled with care. The international trade between China and Britain during the 1870s was a significant economic force, and the unloading of the Loudoun Castle was a testament to the thriving relationship between the two countries. This photograph provides a fascinating glimpse into the tea trade during the late 19th century, a time when the world was becoming increasingly interconnected through international trade and transportation. The Loudoun Castle, with its precious cargo of tea, played a crucial role in this global exchange, and the unloading process at Hankow was a vital step in bringing the tea from China to consumers in Britain and beyond.
