EDITORS COMMENTS
In this hand-colored copperplate engraving, the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the Arch of Hadrian, two iconic landmarks of ancient Athens, come together in a breathtaking view from the south-east. The image, taken from the Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children) published in Weimar, Germany, in 1823 by Friedrich Johann Bertuch, offers a glimpse into the rich history and cultural significance of these ancient structures. The foreground of the print features the remnants of the Temple of Olympian Zeus, with three of its colossal columns standing proudly amidst the ruins. Dedicated to the king of the gods in Greek mythology, the temple was once adorned with over a hundred Ionic columns, making it one of the largest ancient temples. In the background, the Arch of Hadrian, a magnificent Roman triumphal arch, stands as a testament to the Roman occupation of Athens. Named after the Roman Emperor Hadrian, this architectural marvel was built to commemorate his visit to Athens in 131 AD. Perched atop a hill in the distance, the Acropolis and the Parthenon, two of the most famous landmarks in Greece, add to the grandeur of the scene. The Acropolis, an ancient citadel, is home to several ancient Greek buildings, the most famous of which is the Parthenon, a temple dedicated to the goddess Athena. This enchanting illustration invites us to explore the ancient history of Athens, a city that continues to captivate and inspire visitors from around the world. The intricate details of the hand-colored copperplate engraving bring the ruins to life, transporting us back in time to an era of mythology, history, and cultural significance.
