EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph depicts the Tepidarium, or warm bath, situated near the gate to Stabiae in Pompeii. The image is taken from "Pompeii: Views and Restorations" by Antonio Niccolini, published in 1898 by Autoriello & De Luca in Naples. Antonio Niccolini was the grandson of the renowned architect Antonio Niccolini Sr., who played a significant role in the excavation and restoration of Pompeii and other ancient Roman sites. The Tepidarium, a part of the Roman thermae or spa complex, was designed to provide visitors with a warm bathing experience. The bathing room was typically heated by hypocausts, underfloor heating systems, which maintained a comfortable temperature. The bathing area was often adorned with intricate mosaics and frescoes, as evidenced by the detailed illustration in this print. The gate to Stabiae, visible in the background, served as the entrance to the ancient Roman town located nearby. The juxtaposition of the Tepidarium and the gate highlights the integration of public bathing facilities into the daily life of the Roman civilization. This chromolithograph, created by G. Autoriello, offers a glimpse into the rich history and architectural splendor of Pompeii during the late 19th century. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring the ancient ruins to life, allowing us to imagine the luxurious bathing experiences enjoyed by the Romans over two thousand years ago.
