EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handfinished chromolithograph by Henry Noel Humphreys, after an illustration by Jane Loudon, showcases a vibrant and captivating arrangement of twelve distinct flowering plants. The central focus of the composition is the Asiatic Torenia, Torenia asiatica, with its star-shaped, two-toned blossoms. Surrounding it are the Dr. Lindley's Buddlea, Buddlea lindleyana, with its clusters of golden-yellow flowers, and the Clammy Anthocercis, Anthocercis viscosa, characterized by its sticky leaves and pinkish-purple blooms. The twining Rhodochiton volubile, with its bell-shaped, rose-colored flowers, entwines itself around the other plants, while the Lycium-like Solanum, Solanum lycioides, boasts orange-red berries amidst its velvety foliage. The Orange-flowered Cestrum, Cestrum aurantiacum, adds a burst of sunny hues, and the Many-flowered Chaenostoma, Chaenostoma polyanthum, displays its clusters of tiny, white blossoms. Also featured in this magnificent arrangement are the Buddlea species, Buddlea lindleyana, known for its elegant, fern-like leaves and trumpet-shaped flowers, and the Torenia species, Torenia asiatica, which bears bi-colored blooms reminiscent of the morning glory. The Anthocercis viscosa, with its clammy leaves, and the Solanum lycioides, with its lycium-like appearance, add intrigue and texture to the composition. This stunning chromolithograph, taken from Mrs. Jane Loudon's Ladies Flower Garden or Ornamental Greenhouse Plants, published by William S. Orr in London in 1849, is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the natural world, and a reminder of the captivating allure of Victorian-era botanical illustrations.
