EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate engraving is a captivating representation of three fascinating flatfish species: Turbot (Scophthalmus maximus), Peacock Flounder (Bothus lunatus), and Kite (Scophthalmus rhombus). The image, taken from Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm's Encyclopedia of Natural History: Fish, published in Augsburg in 1804, showcases the upper and under sides of each fish. Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm (1758-1811), a Bavarian clergyman and naturalist, was a renowned figure in the scientific community of his time, earning the moniker "German Buffon" for his significant contributions to ichthyology and marine biology. His encyclopedia was a groundbreaking work, featuring meticulously detailed illustrations of various fish species, which were produced using the copperplate engraving technique. The Turbot, depicted on the left side of the engraving, is a large, flatfish with a mottled, brownish-gray upper surface and a white underbelly. It is a commercially important species, highly valued for its delicate, white flesh. The Peacock Flounder, in the middle, is characterized by its striking, colorful patterns on its upper side, resembling the eyespots of a peacock. Its underbelly is a plain, pale color. This intriguing creature is native to the Atlantic and Mediterranean seas. Lastly, the Kite, on the right, displays a diamond-shaped pattern on its upper side, with a white underbelly. It is a common flatfish found in the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean. This enchanting illustration not only serves as a testament to Wilhelm's dedication to documenting the natural world but also offers a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of flatfish species. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring these marine creatures to life, making this a cherished piece for any natural history or art enthusiast.
