EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the grand entrance of United States General Winfield Scott into Mexico City on September 14, 1847, during the Mexican-American War. The victorious general, at the head of a formidable army of soldiers on horseback and on foot, fills the Plaza de la Constitución, the city's central square. The Metropolitan Cathedral, a grandiose architectural masterpiece, looms in the background, its spires reaching towards the heavens. The National Palace, Mexico's seat of power, stands proudly behind the general, with the Stars and Stripes proudly flying above it. The Mexican flag had been lowered, marking the surrender of the Mexican capital to the United States. The occupation of Mexico City was a pivotal moment in the Mexican-American War, which ended with the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in February 1848. The event marked the end of Mexico's sovereignty over Texas, California, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and parts of Colorado, Wyoming, and Kansas. This historic photograph offers a glimpse into a significant moment in American history, when the United States expanded its territory and influence southward.
