EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1823, showcases an intriguing collection of unusual marine creatures. The engraving transports us to an underwater realm teeming with wonder and mystery. At the center, the elongated and eel-like Sea Lamprey, or Petromyzon marinus, is depicted with its distinctive circular mouth filled with suction discs. This parasitic fish attaches itself to larger hosts using its mouth and feeds on their bodily fluids. Next to the Sea Lamprey, a Planehead Filefish, or Stephanolepis hispidus, can be seen. This small, laterally compressed fish is characterized by its unique head shape and spiny dorsal fins. The Elephantfish, or Callorhinchus callorynchus, is also illustrated. With its long, snout-like snout and large, fleshy mouth, this deep-water dwelling fish resembles an elephant's trunk. Among the other fascinating creatures in this engraving are the Red Lamprey, or Petromyzon ruber, the Plainfile Fish, or Balistes elephantopus, and the Spotted Wobbegong, or Orectolobus maculatus. The Chimaera antarctica, a cartilaginous fish with elongated, rod-like fins and a long, pointed snout, is also represented. Additionally, the Seahorse, or Hippocampus hippocampus, can be spotted in this engraving. With its distinctive horse-like head and prehensile tail, the Seahorse is a popular and beloved marine creature. This beautiful and intricately detailed engraving serves as a testament to the fascination and curiosity that the ocean's depths have held for generations. It invites us to explore the wonders of the underwater world and appreciate the diversity and uniqueness of its inhabitants.
