EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking handcoloured lithograph, we find a portrait of Victor-Marie, Duc d'Estrees, Marshal of France (1660-1737). The image, taken from Le Bibliophile Jacob's Costumes Historiques de la France, published in Paris in 1852, showcases the Marshal in full regalia, a testament to his high rank and prestige in the French military and court. Born on January 1, 1660, in Paris, Victor-Marie was the son of a noble family. He began his military career at a young age, serving under King Louis XIV and rising through the ranks due to his exceptional leadership and strategic abilities. In 1702, he was appointed Marshal of France, one of the highest military honours in the kingdom. The Marshal is depicted in the lithograph wearing the uniform of a Marshal of France. The richly decorated coat, adorned with gold braid and embroidery, is worn over a white shirt and a red waistcoat. A sash, also in red, is draped over his left shoulder and fastened at the waist. The Marshal's hat, known as a bicorne, sits atop his head, tilted to one side, and is trimmed with gold lace and feathers. The background of the image is simple, with a plain, dark colour, allowing the Marshal's figure and uniform to take centre stage. The intricate details of the handcoloured lithograph bring the portrait to life, highlighting the grandeur and opulence of the French court during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Victor-Marie, Duc d'Estrees, served as Marshal of France until his death on February 25, 1737. His military career was marked by numerous victories, and he played a significant role in the War of the Spanish Succession. This beautiful lithograph serves as a reminder of his contributions to French history and the grandeur of the French court during this period.
