EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the remnants of the north and east walls of the Convent of St. Clare or Minoresses, a sacred institution founded in 1293 in London, England. The image, created through the meticulous process of copperplate engraving, was drawn and etched by John Thomas Smith for his Topography of London, published in 1812. The convent, which was built primarily from Caen stone and chalk, with rubble, timber oak, and chestnut, was severely damaged by a devastating fire on March 23, 1797. The flames consumed much of the convent, leaving only the sturdy walls as a testament to its former grandeur. The image captures the somber beauty of the ruins, with their intricate details and textures, providing a glimpse into the past. The Convent of St. Clare, also known as the Minoresses, was an important religious site in Regency-era London, and its ruins continue to be a source of fascination and historical significance in the 19th century and beyond.
