EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored steel engraving depicts the White-vented Plumeleteer, or Buffon's Hummingbird (Chalybura buffonii), a captivating species of hummingbird native to South America. The illustration is taken from Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library: Ornithology, specifically the volume dedicated to Hummingbirds, published in Edinburgh by W.H. Lizars in 1833. The White-vented Plumeleteer is named for the distinctive white feathers on its vent, which contrast sharply with the rest of its dark plumage. The male, as depicted in this illustration, is adorned with iridescent green and purple feathers on its back and wings, with a bright orange throat and chest. The female, although less vibrant, shares similar markings but with a duller coloration. This hummingbird is known to inhabit the forests and woodlands of Central and South America, from Belize to Brazil. They are small in size, measuring only around 3 inches in length, and possess the ability to hover in mid-air by rapidly flapping their wings, which can beat up to 80 times per second. The White-vented Plumeleteer is an important pollinator for various flowering plants in its habitat, and its diet consists mainly of nectar and small insects. This charming illustration not only showcases the beauty of this remarkable bird but also contributes to the scientific record of natural history during the 19th century.
