EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely detailed hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts the Willowherb Hawkmoth, Proserpinus proserpina, in the act of feeding on the fragrant white flowers of a strawberry bush (Fragaria x ananassa). The intricate artwork, drawn and etched by the skilled hand of Jacob Ludwig Admiral, was first published in the second edition of "Naauwkeurige Waarneemingen omtrent de veranderingen van veele Insekten" (Accurate Descriptions of the Metamorphoses of Insects) by J. Sluyter in Amsterdam in 1774. For this edition, the work was expanded to include an additional eight plates, bringing the total to thirty-three. The Willowherb Hawkmoth is a beautiful and graceful moth, with a wingspan of up to 5 centimeters. Its wings are adorned with intricate patterns of brown, gray, and white, with a distinctive orange-red spot near the tip of each forewing. The moth's larva, or caterpillar, is characterized by its long, slender body and distinctive hump on its thorax. The image of the Willowherb Hawkmoth in its natural habitat, feeding on the ripe strawberries, is a testament to the intricate relationship between insects and the plants they rely on for food and shelter. The careful observation and documentation of such interactions was a significant contribution to the scientific study of insects during the 18th century. This stunning engraving, with its vibrant colors and intricate details, offers a glimpse into the natural world of over 250 years ago, and serves as a reminder of the beauty and complexity of the natural world that continues to inspire and captivate us today.
