EDITORS COMMENTS
During the fervor of World War I, the Atlantic Ocean became a battleground not just for German U-boats, but also for the largest inhabitants of the sea. In the relentless pursuit of German raiders, Allied forces mistakenly identified the bodies of hundreds of whales, sharks, and other large fish as potential submarines. The powerful weaponry of the Allied fleet was unleashed, leaving the marine life beached and strewn along the Atlantic coast. The image captured in this photograph, taken in 1918, bears witness to the deadly accuracy of the Allied gunfire. The bodies of these marine creatures, now lying on the shore, serve as a haunting reminder of the unintended consequences of war. The line between friend and foe became blurred in the heat of battle, with even the most innocent of creatures falling victim to the relentless hunt. This photograph, taken in the 1910s, is a poignant testament to the destructive power of war and the unintended consequences of military action.
