Wycliffe explains his thoughts before the Archbishop

John Wycliffe (circa 1320s 1384) -an English scholastic philosopher, theologian, biblical translator, reformer, priest, and a seminary professor at the University of Oxford. He became an influential dissident within the Roman Catholic priesthood during the 14th century and is considered an important predecessor to Protestantism. Wycliffe attacked the privileged status of the clergy, which had bolstered their powerful role in England. He then attacked the luxury and pomp of local parishes and their ceremonies. On 17 November 1382, Wycliffe was summoned before a synod at Oxford, here he explained his thoughts before the Archbishop of Canterbury and other Bishops.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative image, English scholar and theologian John Wycliffe (circa 1320s-1384) stands before the Archbishop of Canterbury and other bishops at a synod held at the University of Oxford on 17 November 1382. Widely regarded as an influential dissident within the Roman Catholic priesthood during the 14th century, Wycliffe's radical ideas would lay the groundwork for the Protestant Reformation. The scholarly figure of Wycliffe, dressed in the robes of a priest and professor, is seen intently addressing the assembled bishops. His impassioned speech, delivered with unwavering conviction, challenges the privileged status of the clergy and their luxurious lifestyles. Wycliffe's criticisms of local parishes and their ceremonies had already stirred controversy, and this confrontation at the synod would only intensify the conflict. Wycliffe's reformist ideas, which included advocating for the translation of the Bible into the vernacular language, were seen as a direct threat to the Church's authority. The bishops, seated in solemn assembly, listen intently to Wycliffe's words, their expressions a mix of curiosity, skepticism, and concern. The room is filled with a palpable tension, as the future of religious thought in England hangs in the balance. This powerful image captures a pivotal moment in history, as Wycliffe bravely voices his dissenting opinions before the very authorities he seeks to challenge. The photograph, taken from Mary Evans Prints Online, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of religious upheaval and the birth of new ideas.
