EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 19th century print depicts a young lady from Bagneres-de-Bigorre, a picturesque town nestled at the foot of the French Pyrenees. The young woman is elegantly dressed in traditional attire, including a Pyrenean capulet or hood made of fine cashmere, lined with velvet. Over the capulet, she wears a fontange bonnet adorned with intricate lace and ribbons, adding a touch of sophistication to her outfit. The young lady holds an umbrella in one hand, suggesting a possible outing in the rain, while her other hand is tucked into the folds of her apron. Her petticoat and full skirt are also visible beneath her capulet, adding to the overall impression of grandeur and opulence. This handcoloured copperplate engraving is a beautiful representation of the traditional costumes of the Pyrenees region during the 19th century. It was created by the skilled hands of Georges Jacques Gatine, based on an illustration by Louis Marie Lante, and published in the esteemed Costumes of Various Countries, Costumes de Divers Pays, in Paris in 1827. The intricate details and vibrant colours of the engraving bring the young lady to life, transporting us back in time to the charming town of Bagneres-de-Bigorre and the beautiful Pyrenees mountains.
