EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, taken from John Mason Good's "Pantologia, a New Encyclopedia," published in London in 1813, showcases two remarkable species of the animal kingdom: the Zebu humped cattle (Bos indicus) and the European bison, also known as the Wisent (Bison bonasus). The Zebu cattle, depicted on the left side of the image, are native to the Indian subcontinent and are easily identified by their distinctive hump over the shoulders. This physical trait is an adaptation to the hot climate, helping the animals to conserve water and energy by minimizing the surface area of their bodies exposed to the sun. The intricate details of their coat patterns, with alternating stripes and spots, are beautifully captured in the engraving. On the right side of the image, the European bison, or Wisent, can be seen. This large, powerful animal is native to Europe and was once widespread across the continent. The European bison is the heaviest living European terrestrial animal and is easily distinguished by its shaggy, long coat, massive body, and large, curved horns. The image captures the bison's regal and powerful appearance, with its head turned towards the viewer. Sydenham Edwards, a renowned British naturalist and illustrator, created the original drawings for this engraving, providing an accurate and detailed representation of these fascinating animals. The hand-coloring adds a vibrant and lifelike quality to the image, making it a beautiful and educational piece of zoological art.
