EDITORS COMMENTS
In this stunning oval portrait, Princess Louise of Baden, later known as Empress Elizabeth Alexeievna of Russia, is depicted in her youthful beauty and grandeur. The image, captured around 1795, showcases the Princess in an elegant and refined manner, wearing an intricately designed dress with a high neckline and long sleeves, accessorized with a pearl choker and earrings. Her hair is styled in an elaborate updo, adorned with a diadem and cascading curls framing her face. Born on December 12, 1779, in Karlsruhe, Baden, Germany, Louise was the eldest daughter of Charles Louis, Hereditary Prince of Baden, and Amalie of Hesse-Darmstadt. In 1801, she married Emperor Alexander I of Russia, becoming the Empress consort of the vast Russian Empire. The marriage was a politically strategic one, as Russia sought to strengthen its ties with Europe and distance itself from France. Elizabeth Alexeievna's reign as Empress was marked by her dedication to the arts, education, and the welfare of her people. She was known for her patronage of the arts, particularly ballet and opera, and established the Imperial Theatres Committee. Additionally, she supported the education of girls and founded the Smolny Institute for Noble Maidens in St. Petersburg. Despite her many accomplishments, Elizabeth Alexeievna's reign was short-lived. In 1805, she was forced to abdicate due to her husband's growing disillusionment with her German upbringing and her perceived pro-French sympathies. She was exiled to Germany, where she lived out the rest of her days. This portrait of Elizabeth Alexeievna, taken during her youth and before her reign as Empress, offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable woman who left an indelible mark on Russian history.
