EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the enigmatic beauty of the Las Monjas Quadrangle, also known as the Nunnery, at the ancient Mayan city of Uxmal in the Yucatan region of Mexico. Dating back to the post-classic period of the Mayan civilization, circa 1200 AD, this architectural marvel is a testament to the advanced knowledge and artistic prowess of the Maya people. The Las Monjas Quadrangle, despite its misleading nickname, was actually a government palace with elaborately carved facades on both the inside and outside faces. The exterior walls are adorned with intricate Mayan glyphs, geometric patterns, and the iconic masks of the rain god Chac and the maize god Yum Kaax. The interior walls are equally impressive, with intricate stucco carvings of mythological figures and celestial bodies. The pyramid-like structure, with its distinctive stepped terraces and central tower, is a masterpiece of Mayan architecture. Its name, Las Monjas, or The Nuns, is believed to have been given by the Spanish conquistadors due to the similarity of the building's shape to that of a convent. This photograph, taken in the 1940s, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back in time to an era of ancient civilizations and mysterious cultures. The ruins of Uxmal, with their intricate carvings and architectural grandeur, continue to captivate visitors from around the world, serving as a reminder of the rich history and artistic legacy of the Maya people.
