EDITORS COMMENTS
This haunting image captures the moment of despair and anguish on the face of the young Roman Emperor Antoninus II Elagabalus, also known as Heliogabalus (204-222 AD). Elagabalus and his mother Soaemias Bassiana had ruled Rome in a reign marked by extreme eccentricities and vile debaucheries that left the Roman populace and army exasperated. Elagabalus, who was only 14 years old when he came to power, was known for his unconventional religious practices, which included the worship of the Syrian god Elagabal, and his preference for male lovers. His mother, Soaemias, was an influential figure in his court and was rumored to have played a significant role in his reign. The Roman soldiers, disillusioned and outraged by the immoral behavior of the emperor and his mother, conspired to end their reign. In this print, Elagabalus appears to be on the verge of tears, perhaps realizing the gravity of the situation as the soldiers close in on him. The scene is a poignant reminder of the fragility of power and the consequences of ruling with disregard for the values and traditions of one's people. The assassination of Elagabalus and Soaemias marked the end of their brief and tumultuous reign. Elagabalus was succeeded by his cousin Alexander Severus, who attempted to restore order and stability to Rome. This print offers a glimpse into a pivotal moment in Roman history, a moment of uncertainty and change, and a reminder of the human cost of power and its misuse.
