The Bells Photophone, not to be confused with the Bell Telephone Company, was an experimental device used for transmitting images and Morse code messages visually over long distances. In one room, a person could be seen operating a device that would produce a pattern of light flashes on a mirror, which would then be reflected and transmitted to the next mirror in the chain. The Bells Photophone was an important precursor to the development of the telephone and other forms of long-distance communication.
