EDITORS COMMENTS
Berenguer Ramon II, also known as Ramon Berenguer I of Barcelona, or the Fratricide, was a pivotal figure in the medieval history of Catalonia. Born around 1053, he ascended to the countship of Barcelona in 1076 following the assassination of his older brother, Ramon Berenguer I. This engraving, taken from Spain Illustrated History of the 19th century, depicts a significant moment in Ramon Berenguer II's reign: the conquest of Tarragona in 1081. The image shows the count on horseback, leading his army towards the city walls. The soldiers, dressed in medieval armor and bearing shields, follow closely behind. The building in the background, with its towers and battlements, represents the city of Tarragona, which was a crucial strategic location in the region. Ramon Berenguer II's conquest of Tarragona marked the beginning of the expansion of the County of Barcelona, which would later become the Kingdom of Aragon. The count's military prowess and political acumen allowed him to consolidate his power and expand his territories, making him one of the most influential figures of the Middle Ages in Catalonia. The engraving captures the intensity and determination of Ramon Berenguer II and his soldiers as they prepare to take the city. The image is a testament to the military occupation and the courage of the men of the Middle Ages, who fought for their lands and their leaders with unwavering loyalty and dedication.
