EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the notorious figure of Jack Sheppard, an English thief who made headlines in the early 18th century with his almost daily robberies in and around London. Born in 1702, Sheppard's criminal exploits began at a young age, and he quickly gained a reputation for his daring escapes from Newgate Prison. Sheppard's most famous escape occurred in 1723, when he managed to break out of Newgate's heavily fortified clink prison within the prison itself. He reportedly used a makeshift ladder made of bedsheets and bones to climb to freedom. This remarkable feat only fueled Sheppard's legend, and he continued to elude capture for several more months. However, Sheppard's luck eventually ran out. In early 1724, he was once again captured and this time, there was no escape. He was brought before the public for a final display of his criminal exploits before being hanged at Tyburn Tree on March 16, 1724. The print depicts Sheppard in the prime of his criminal career, with a mischievous grin on his face and a bag of stolen goods in hand. The image serves as a stark reminder of the allure and danger of a life of crime, as well as the futility of trying to outsmart the law. Jack Sheppard's story is a fascinating glimpse into the criminal underworld of 18th-century London, and this print offers a unique and intriguing window into this period of history.
