EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful photograph captures the tense moment during a demonstration in Geneva, Switzerland on 30 June 1936, as Italian journalists are forcibly removed from the League Palace. The protest was in response to the presence of Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie, whom the Italian journalists had labeled as a "slaver" and a "tyrant." The Ethiopian emperor had been invited to Geneva to address the League of Nations, an international organization dedicated to maintaining peace and security among nations, regarding the ongoing conflict between Ethiopia and Italy. The Italian journalists, who were strongly opposed to the emperor's presence, were determined to voice their disapproval. They gathered outside the League Palace, where the emperor was scheduled to speak, and began to protest, shouting and waving banners. The Swiss police, responsible for maintaining order, responded with rough treatment, jostling and pushing the journalists to clear the area. The photograph shows a chaotic scene, with Italian journalists being thrown out of the palace entrance, their papers and equipment flying in the air. The scene is a stark reminder of the political tensions and conflicts that were prevalent during this time, as well as the role of the media in shaping public opinion and influencing international relations. The demonstration in Geneva was a significant event in the lead up to the Second Italo-Ethiopian War, which began in October 1935 and ended with Italy's conquest of Ethiopia. This photograph serves as an important historical record of this turbulent period in world history.
