A group of Freemasons planting their banners in front of the Porte Maillot, during the Paris Commune, April 1871. The Freemasons were one of many groups who tried to encourage Thiers, the leader of the Versailles Government, to negotiate with the Communards. At the end of April 1871 a group of Freemasons, wearing top hats and carrying their insignia and banners, mounted the ramparts to try to intercede in the fighting, to avoid a blood-bath in Paris. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative image from the Paris Commune of 1871, a group of Freemasons are seen planting their banners outside the Porte Maillot in Paris. The Paris Commune was a revolutionary period in French history, during which the working classes of Paris seized control of the city from the French government. The Freemasons, an organization known for its secretive fraternal rites and values of morality, charity, and brotherly love, were among many groups who attempted to intervene in the conflict and encourage negotiation between the Communards and the leader of the Versailles Government, Adolphe Thiers. The Freemasons, dressed in top hats and carrying their distinctive insignia and banners, are shown here mounting the ramparts of Porte Maillot in an attempt to intercede in the fighting and prevent a potential bloodbath in Paris. Unfortunately, their efforts were not successful, as the violence between the government forces and the Communards continued to escalate. This photograph provides a unique glimpse into the political turmoil of 1871 Paris and the role that various groups, including the Freemasons, played in attempting to bring about a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The image is a poignant reminder of the complex and often contentious relationships between different factions during times of political upheaval. The photograph, taken in April 1871, captures a moment in history that continues to fascinate historians and scholars, offering insights into the social, political, and cultural dynamics of the time. The Freemasons' bold display of their banners outside Porte Maillot serves as a powerful symbol of their determination to bring about peace and reconciliation in the midst of chaos and conflict.
