Dating back to the Middle Ages, this European tradition predates the modern-day American Santa Claus. In Germany, Saint Nicolas is depicted as a bishop dressed in red robes and a mitre, carrying a staff and accompanied by Knecht Ruprecht, a helper dressed in black with a bundle of birch rods. The scene in this image takes place on the eve of Saint Nicolas Day, December 6th, when children would put their shoes out by the fireplace or by the door, hoping to find them filled with small treats, nuts, or fruit the next morning. Saint Nicolas would visit homes during the night, leaving gifts for the well-behaved children and a rod for those who had misbehaved.
