This poignant image captures the moment of separation between King Louis XVI and his family as they were imprisoned in the Tour du Temple in Paris on August 26, 1792. The French Revolution, which had been simmering for years, had reached a boiling point. The monarchy, long criticized for its extravagance and perceived out-of-touchness with the common people, was now under siege. The fall of the Bastille on July 14, 1789, had marked the beginning of the end for the Bourbon monarchy. The tide turned against Louis XVI as the people of Paris grew increasingly restless, and on August 10, 1792, the National Assembly declared the monarchy abolished and the First French Republic established. In the days that followed, the royal family was moved from the Tuileries Palace to the Temple Prison, a fortress in the heart of Paris. This print depicts the king, dressed in a simple brown coat and trousers, bidding farewell to his wife, Marie Antoinette, and their children as they were led away. The queen is seen holding her youngest child, the Dauphin, in her arms, while the other children cling to their mother. The image is a poignant reminder of the human cost of the Revolution, as a once-powerful monarch and his family were reduced to helpless prisoners. The fate of the royal family would be sealed in the following years, with Louis XVI being tried and executed in 1793, and Marie Antoinette meeting the same end in 1793. The Tour du Temple would later serve as a symbol of the Revolution's triumph over the old order, but for the royal family, it was a place of despair and uncertainty.
