This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Marten, Martes martes, and Wolverine, Gulo gulo," is an exquisite illustration from Antoine Jussieu's Dictionary of Natural Science, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was created by the renowned French painter and illustrator, Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), and expertly engraved by Terreni, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. Batelli e Figli published this remarkable work of art. Pretre was considered one of the greatest French botanical illustrators of the 19th century, and his work graced the pages of numerous natural history publications. This particular illustration showcases two fascinating creatures of the European wilderness: the Marten (Martes martes), a member of the weasel family, and the Wolverine (Gulo gulo), also known as the glutton or the devil bear. The Marten is depicted with its bushy tail curled around its body, while its sharp claws and pointed snout are clearly visible. The Wolverine, on the other hand, is shown in an attacking stance, with its powerful limbs and distinctive ruff of fur around its neck on full display. The intricate stipple engraving technique used in this print brings out the textures and details of the animals' fur, making for a visually captivating and lifelike representation. This illustration holds historical significance as well, as it was created during the time of Empress Josephine's reign in France. Empress Josephine was an avid collector of exotic animals and maintained a personal menagerie, which may have inspired the creation of this work.
