EDITORS COMMENTS
In the heart of London, St Paul's Cathedral stands proudly against the backdrop of a bustling city, its iconic dome reaching for the heavens. Yet, in 1913, the future of this historic landmark was under threat. The proposed tramway scheme, an ambitious plan to expand London's transport network, posed a significant risk to the cathedral's foundations. The sectional view from the south-east, as depicted in this print from Mary Evans Prints Online, illustrates the precarious position of St Paul's in relation to the planned underground line. The waterline below the cathedral adds an extra layer of concern, as the foundations of the building were known to be vulnerable to water damage. The Dean of St Paul's, the Very Reverend William S. Torrance, was a vocal opponent of the tramway scheme. He believed that the construction could cause irreparable damage to the cathedral's foundations and undermine its structural integrity. The Dean's concerns were not unfounded, as the cathedral had already suffered from subsidence and water damage in the past. The proposed tramway line was to be built just a few feet away from the cathedral's foundations, and the potential for damage was significant. The Dean and other concerned parties argued for the protection of this national treasure, calling for the tramway to be rerouted or abandoned altogether. The debate over the tramway scheme highlighted the importance of preserving London's heritage and the delicate balance between progress and conservation. The issue was eventually resolved, with the tramway being rerouted to avoid the cathedral's foundations. Today, St Paul's Cathedral continues to be a symbol of London's rich history and a testament to the power of community action in protecting our cultural heritage.
