EDITORS COMMENTS
Admiralty Arch: A Grand Testament to Queen Victoria's Reign This stunning oil painting captures the grandeur of Admiralty Arch, an iconic London landmark that provides both road and pedestrian access between The Mall and Trafalgar Square. Commissioned in September 1910 in memory of Queen Victoria, the Arch was designed by the renowned architect Sir Aston Webb. The painting, believed to date from around 1930, showcases the Arch in all its glory, with its intricate carvings, Corinthian columns, and ornate detailing. The Admiralty Arch was built to connect the Admiralty, the British government department responsible for the navy, with the surrounding area, including Trafalgar Square and The Mall, which leads to Buckingham Palace. The Arch's design is a fitting tribute to Queen Victoria, who reigned for over 63 years, making her the longest-reigning monarch in British history. Sir Aston Webb, who also designed the nearby Canada Gate and the Victoria Memorial, drew inspiration from ancient Roman architecture for the Admiralty Arch. The Arch's design includes a statue of Queen Victoria on horseback, which was originally intended to be placed atop the Arch but was ultimately placed on a pedestal in front of it. This beautiful oil painting, part of the March of the Women Collection from Mary Evans Prints Online, is a testament to the artistic vision of Esther Sutro, the artist behind the work. Sutro's use of rich colors and bold brushstrokes brings the Admiralty Arch to life, capturing its grandeur and historical significance for generations to come.
