This engraving depicts a man from the Bateke tribe, located in the upper course of the Alima River in what is now the Republic of Congo. The Bateke people, also known as the Teke or Tio-Tyo, are an ethnic group belonging to the larger Bantu family of peoples. They are indigenous to Central Africa and have a rich cultural history that predates European exploration and colonization. The image is taken from "El Congo y la Creacion del Estado Independiente de este nombre. Historia de los Trabajos y Exploraciones Verificados" (The Congo and the Founding of its Free State. A Story of Work and Exploration), published in Barcelona around 1890. The book was edited by Henry M. Stanley, an American journalist, and explorer who is best known for his role in the search for the missing explorer David Livingstone and his famous cry, "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" In this engraving, the man is shown barefoot, standing tall with a spear and a lance in his hands.
